For those of you fortunate enough to not know what BuzzFeed is, it’s a website that specializes in super cheesy, cringy, click-bait articles. BuzzFeed has a massive fan following, and it’s one of the most popular websites on the Internet. However, I’m not the biggest fan of BuzzFeed, I must say. Call me crazy, but I just don’t like taking quizzes titled “What Is Your Inner Potato?” or reading listicles like “21 Foods That Forgot How To Food.”
There are plenty of things I don’t like about BuzzFeed, but what I hate the most is that BuzzFeed celebrates and glorifies obesity.
Before I go on a rant, let’s establish something important: loving your body and being comfortable in your skin is a great thing. Accepting it and normalizing an obese, unhealthy body is not.
BuzzFeed has published many articles in which they’ve celebrated obesity. They received plenty of accolades too. However, normalizing something that could lead to a number of serious medical conditions is irresponsible.
You shouldn’t feel ashamed of being overweight, but you shouldn’t be proud of it either. BuzzFeed asks its readers to embrace obesity, which is just wrong.
On March 2016, BuzzFeed posted a video that was pretty much about how awesome it is to be morbidly obese. Instead of encouraging people to exercise, eat right and make healthier lifestyle choices, BuzzFeed glorifies obesity. What happens next? Hipsters from all around the world applaud the video, share it, and eventually give BuzzFeed what they really want: Traffic and Clicks.
Since being healthy and telling someone it’s not good to be obese has now become some form of discrimination, not many speak about it anymore. Hipsters on social media unleash a barrage of abuse if you dare say anything bad about being overweight. Speaking out about the harmful effects of obesity is now called ‘fat shaming.’
When we talk about weight loss, people almost always link it to the concept of “looking good.” NO! It’s not about looking good on the outside; it’s all about making sure that you are helping the internal functions of your body to perform the best they can.
Obesity has tremendous health consequences and it can lead to a number of life-threatening health conditions. Being obese and doing nothing about it is as ridiculous as body shaming. Love yourself enough to make healthy lifestyle choices. You will never regret making the effort to be in control of your weight.
The negative effects of obesity are serious, yet preventable. Ignore all the bullshit articles and videos that say being overweight is OK, because it’s not. Obesity needs to be treated, not accepted. Consider exploring alternative approaches to weight management, such as green gold CBD products, which may provide additional support on your journey to better health.
Sigh. Unfortunately, it’s an uphill task now to curb rising obesity. Buzzfeed and Refinery aren’t exactly helping.
